EDMONTON — A total of seven FC Edmonton Academy player graduates and coaches have been rewarded for their efforts in their respective 2017 CCAA and U SPORTS seasons, including two top individual awards.
Academy graduate Oscar Miranda’s first season with the NAIT Ooks was one to remember as the midfielder was named ACAC (Alberta Collegiate Athletic Association) Rookie of the Year and a CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) All-Canadian with three goals and an assist in nine starts.
Ooks head coach and Academy coach Charles O’Toole earned CCAA Coach of the Year honours after leading his side to a 9-1-0 record in 2017, including a total of 25 goals scored and only five goals conceded all season with an undefeated month of October (5-0-0).
“The CCAA is very proud to have Charles as the Coach of the Year,” said David Munro, CCAA Men’s Soccer Convenor in a release issued on Tuesday. “He won a CCAA National Championship with the Ooks as a player and as an assistant coach and he’ll be looking to do the same this week as the head coach.”
Miranda and O’Toole aim to cap off their stellar seasons both individually and as a team when the Ooks compete for the CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship in Nanaimo, BC from Nov. 8-11, beginning with a quarter-final matchup against the Durham Lords at 4:00PM MT on Wednesday.
An FC Edmonton Academy-heavy University of Alberta Golden Bears side fell in the Canada West Final Four bronze medal match, but graduates Connor James, Noah Cunningham, Bruno Zebie and forward Ajeej Sakaria were named First-Team All-Stars while Ajay Khabra earned Second-Team All-Star honours.
