Edmonton, AB (March 3, 2022) –– FC Edmonton confirmed they have acquired defender Luke Singh on loan from Toronto FC (MLS) today.

Singh, a 21-year-old native of Brampton, Ontario, broke into the TFC first team in 2021, making eight appearances for the club -- including two in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League against Mexican side Léon. He has been a part of Toronto's youth system since 2017, having played for the Reds at various reserve levels including both Toronto FC III in League1 Ontario and Toronto FC II in USL League One. He also spent a brief period in 2019 on loan with Danish club Brøndby, where he made 24 appearances between the reserve and U-19 teams.

After representing Trinidad and Tobago at several youth levels, Singh accepted a call-up to the Canadian senior national team in June 2021 and participated in a camp, though he did not see any game action. He's still eligible to play for Trinidad at the international level.

Singh is a solid athletic centre-back with good aerial ability, and he's comfortable on the ball with both feet.

“We are excited to embrace Luke with our team this season,” said Alan Koch, Head Coach FC Edmonton. “He is a talented young player with some excellent professional football experiences already. I am excited to work with him, push him to help develop his game further, and hopefully have him aid in team success.”

FC Edmonton will kick the season off at home on Sunday April 10 against Valour FC at 2pm MT at Clarke Stadium.

FC Edmonton announced the signing of centre-forward Mamadi Camara today.

Camara played ten times for HFX Wanderers in 2021 after signing for the club as a mid-season acquisition in September. The 26-year-old centre-forward scored his first CPL goal in a 2-2 draw with York United, helping bolster the Wanderers' attack during their playoff push.

The Montreal-born striker is a former Simon Fraser University player, where he was coached by FC Edmonton Head Coach Alan Koch, and he scored 29 goals in 69 appearances. He was also named the GNAC first team all-star in each of his 4 seasons (2015-2018) before being named GNAC player of the year in his final year. In 2019, Camara was selected 46th overall by San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS draft before spending the abbreviated 2020 season at USL club Colorado Switchbacks.

“Mamadi is an intelligent, hard-working and versatile player,” said Eddies Head Coach Alan Koch. “We look forward to integrating him into our system of play and allowing him to flourish in this environment. The opportunity is there for Mamadi to show that he can be an impactful player in the league. Having coached him before I know that the potential to break through is there, now it is up to us together to kick on to higher levels.”

FC Edmonton confirmed they have acquired German attackers Julian Ulbricht and Tobias Warschewski on loan along with young Nine Stripes' defender Felix N'sa from York United FC (CPL) today. (Read here)

“Having the opportunity to tap into additional loaned players from each of our member CPL clubs is a valuable asset this season,” said FC Edmonton President, Jeff Harrop. “Adding seasoned players to our young roster to bring some experience and leadership from other clubs will help boost our squad’s calibre and continues to create more pathway opportunities for players overall.”

Ulbricht spent the 2021 campaign with York United, making 18 appearances in the Canadian Premier League and finding the net three times. The 22-year-old also added two more goals in the Canadian Championship. An early injury impacted his contributions, but he was frequently involved in the latter half of the season.

Previously, Ulbricht was part of the highly-regarded youth setup at famous German side Hamburg SV and spent three seasons featuring for their second team in Regionalliga Nord – the fourth tier of German football – and competing against the likes of Werder Bremen II, Wolfsburg II, FC St Pauli II and Hannover 96 II. He also enjoyed a successful loan spell with FC Phönix Lübeck, also of Germany’s fourth tier, in late-2020 where - coincidentally - he formed an excellent partnership with Warschewski.

“Julian is a player that we were aware of before he came to the CPL. With more minutes we think he is capable of more and we will work with him to get that out of him in our environment,” said Alan Koch, Head Coach, FC Edmonton. “We look forward to seeing him integrate into our new-look team, but also building on his already existing relationship with Tobi.”

The 24-year-old Warschewski, a native of Dortmund, spent his early career with SC Preußen Münster and impressed in Germany's third tier before signing with Phönix Lübeck. From there he was snapped up by the CPL and joined FC Edmonton for the 2021 campaign.

He enjoyed a superb season, managing four goals while also contributing a league-leading seven assists from his 26 appearances. His performances with the Eddies ensured he was voted 29th in the CPL50 list unveiled by the league at the end of last year.

“Tobi was a player who had been removed from high levels of football for some time before he joined us last year,” said Koch. “We worked incredibly hard with him to get him fit and back to confidence levels where he could perform. He was one of the top players in the league last year, and we want to push him to be right at the top in 2022.”

18-year-old N'sa, the younger brother of York United defender Chrisnovic, endured a difficult debut campaign for the club. A back injury sustained in pre-season ensured he was ruled out for the remainder of the year, and he was unable to contribute on the field. A move to Edmonton will now give him the chance to pick up meaningful minutes and continue his development.

"We are looking forward to working with Felix competing to get the minutes he missed out on last year due to injury," said Head Coach Alan Koch. "He is a welcome addition to our squad of young players who are up for this season's challenge."

Edmonton, AB (February 9, 2022) – FC Edmonton announced the return of Eddies players defender T-Boy Fayia (fay-EYE-uh) and goalkeeper Darlington Murasiranwa (mur-uh-sir-ON-wah) today.

After easing into the squad this summer after an injury, T-Boy played six-straight league matches, providing Koch with a versatile option on either side of defence, swapping left back and right back duties and proved himself as a reliable defender.

The 21-year-old was born in Monrovia, Liberia but grew up in Edmonton and is passionate about playing in front of his hometown fans. Showcased as one of the CPL’s “The Next Gen” in 2021 has a bright future with the Eddies.

“T-Boy is a young local full-back with a high ceiling. He had some very impressive performances in his first professional season, and we look forward to seeing further growth in his career this season,” said Head Coach Alan Koch.

Murasiranwa is set for his second season with the Eddies after making five appearances for the club in the 2021 season. The former University of Guelph Gryphons netminder earned a clean sheet in FCE’s final match of the year – a 1-0 win over CPL Finals-bound Forge FC at Clarke Field.

The 21-year-old is a product of the FC Edmonton youth academy. Before joining FC Edmonton’s academy, in 2016 Murasiranwa joined Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s youth academy as a member of its U16 side. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Murasiranwa (6’0”, 170 pounds) moved to Edmonton with his family when he was 13 years old.

According to Koch, “Darlington came in to join us last season and played in his first professional games. He is a young local goalkeeper with massive potential, and we are excited to continue to work with him and push him to the highest levels possible.

“Both of these players embody who we are. They are both young charismatic players who bring an infectious attitude to the daily work environment and we look forward to welcoming them back to the team again in 2022.”

Fayia and Murasiranwa will be the only two returning FC Edmonton players from 2021. The club would like to thank all the 2021 players for their valuable contributions to the team both on and off the field.

FC Edmonton will kick the season off at home on Sunday April 10 against Valour FC at 2pm MT at Clarke Field.

Edmonton, AB (January 20, 2022) – FC Edmonton selected forward Kairo Coore from Cape Breton University (second overall) and Parisian midfielder Quentin Paumier from the University of Montréal in Thursday’s 2022 CPL-U SPORTS Draft.

A dynamic striker, Coore is a second-year student from Whitby, Ontario. The 20-year-old is a product of Erin Mills Soccer Club in Mississauga and prior to joining the Capers played two seasons in Division 2 competition with the NCAA's Saginaw Valley State Cardinal of Michigan.

FC Edmonton’s second pick, Quentin Paumier is from Marseilles, France where he developed at Olympique Marseille and is in his third year studying Economic Sciences. The University of Montréal Carabins, Captain scored a big 90th minute goal to help lead his side to the 2021 U SPORTS National Championship.

The two draft picks will be invited to FC Edmonton pre-season training with the hopes of securing a 2022 U SPORTS Development Contract for the upcoming season, which would allow them as student-athletes with one to four years of U SPORTS eligibility remaining to sign with a CPL club while preserving their eligibility before returning to U SPORTS competition.

Since 2018, the Canadian Premier League has held a draft for eligible U SPORTS men’s soccer players who have registered and declared themselves available to be selected through the League’s annual draft, with 165 athletes declaring for this year’s draft.

Toronto, ON (December 31, 2021) – The Canadian Premier League (CPL) and the Fath family today announced a transition of operations of FC Edmonton to the League office, effective immediately.

This is the continuation of a well-planned strategy to develop new ownership for one of the League’s Founding Clubs, while ensuring its long-term success in Edmonton.

The Canadian Premier League and the Fath family have been working for several months to identify and assess potential new owners and that process is ongoing. To ensure a smooth transition, the CPL has been involved in the Club’s day-to-day business and football operations and will continue to do so until a transition to a new, permanent ownership group is completed.

Tom Fath will remain with FC Edmonton as a strategic advisor throughout the process while Alan Koch will remain as the head coach and work closely with the CPL football operations department to build a competitive roster for the 2022 season.

"No group has done more for soccer in Edmonton than the Fath family. Their work to give local players a pathway and a purpose in many ways inspired the creation of the Canadian Premier League," said David Clanachan, Canadian Premier League Commissioner. "The League thanks Tom and Dave for their unwavering commitment and contributions to the growth of the professional game and to the growth of Canada as a soccer nation."

"We have had significant interest in the Club from both local and international investors as Edmonton has the potential to be a world class soccer city," Commissioner Clanachan, continued. "There is plenty of work to do, that starts with a strong local professional club focused on augmenting the fan experience, building a consistent competitive Club on the pitch, and working on a long-term plan to ensure that the Edmonton professional soccer stadium can deliver what is expected from today’s sophisticated sports fan."

Tom and his brother Dave Fath launched the club in 2010 to provide a pathway for local players to play at an elite level. The club ceased playing in the NASL after the 2017 season but remained fully committed to its acclaimed academy program, then joining the Canadian Premier League for its inaugural season in 2019.

"FC Edmonton was founded in a spirit of partnership and support for our community. We are extremely proud of the work our team has done in the development of soccer in this wonderfully passionate community," said Tom Fath. "Now is the time for new leadership as our Club and the city of Edmonton ring in this exciting new era for professional soccer in Canada. Our hope is to continue on in a minority position with the new ownership group."

Born and raised in Edmonton, it doesn’t get much sweeter than the story told by Saah T-Boy Fayia this season.

A former product of the FCE academy and Vancouver Whitecaps’ youth system, the 20-year-old was added late in the pre-season by Alan Koch’s Eddies side. An explosive fullback with significant defensive qualities, Fayia proved to be more than a bit-part player. After easing into the squad this Summer after an injury, T-Boy played six-straight league matches, swapping left back and right back duties and looked solid as an extra piece in Koch’s tool chest.

His best appearance came in October in a 1-1 draw away to Cavalry FC. Fayia helped set up the Al Classico’s opening goal with a mesmerizing run, catching CPL standout Mo Farsi off guard, and sending a neat cross to fellow Edmontonian Marcus Velado-Tsegaye for an opener after 15 minutes.

https://twitter.com/CPLsoccer/status/1446936498746675205

Defensively, he led FCE in tackles with five and shared the team lead for interceptions with three in that match – earning Gatorade Team of the Week honours in the process.

"Just to play in this derby, we know how important it is to us as Edmontonians," Fayia said after the game. "As youngsters growing up, you always want to play in these big games, so it meant a lot for all of us. We had to prove something for us, and the team, so it was good."

Fayia’s passion to represent his hometown was evident in 2021 – as was his future in the game.

We are thrilled to announce the inaugural CPL50, a celebration of many of our players after a fantastic and unique year for all in 2021. Throughout December we will count down and reveal the best 50 players from the 2021 Canadian Premier League regular season, thanks to the work of a fantastic panel of prominent media members and coaches from within our league.

Ten media members who covered the league closer than anyone else and one coach from each team each sat down and compiled their best 20 players of the 2021 regular season. Coaches were not allowed to pick any players from his own club. Seven head coaches of the clubs involved participated, while Valour FC assistant coach Damian Rocke joined the process to represent their club as Rob Gale, and his replacement Phil Dos Santos, did not work the entire season.

Process:

Judges were asked to fill out their ballot with one question in mind: Who was the best player in the Canadian Premier League in 2021?

All votes were counted and completed before the playoffs started. This is based on the regular season, with each team playing 28 games in total. No coach was allowed to vote for any of his own players, and with each team featured once in the ballot it meant that all players at any position were eligible to appear on 17 of the 18 ballots. Once all 18 ballots were received they were placed into a spreadsheet through a points system (20 points for 1st down to 1 point for 20th) to produce the best 50 players of the campaign. In the event of a tie, the player featured on more ballots was given the higher ranking.

Countdown:

We will release the list in groups of five over two weeks, counting down to the top five and the winner to be revealed on Wednesday December 22nd.

Cyle Larin’s two goals at a snowy Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton Tuesday night might have just put Canada on the path to their first FIFA men's World Cup in 35 years.

The Canadian side bested Concacaf giants Mexico 2-1 to go top in the final round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying and, in turn, their chances of qualifying for their first finals since 1986 took a dramatic swing upwards.

Head coach John Herdman elected to make a handful of changes from the side that beat Costa Rica on Friday, most notably Larin replacing goalscorer Jonathan David while reverting to a back-three system featuring the return of Alistair Johnston and Doneil Henry.

Mexico, meanwhile, reverted to a defensive back five – attempting to nullify the pacy Canada attacking core.

Opening proceedings in Edmonton were cagey as both teams looked to break a rough-and-tumble rhythm while adjusting to the icy cold temperatures, which plunged to -10 Celsius by the match’s end.

Chances were few and far between before halftime when Johnston surged forward to lace a right-footed shot from distance mishandled by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa… A save landed at the foot of Larin who shifted his body and slotted home a go-ahead goal. Larin’s goal put Commonwealth Stadium on their feet in a flash – and sent Herdman and co. into the break with an advantage.

Larin, of course, struck again after halftime with Stephen Eustáquio’s brilliant free-kick delivery landing on a platter for the Beşiktaş striker, who smacked in a second to become Canada’s joint all-time goalscoring record with his 22nd for Canada, tying Dwyane De Rosario for the record.

Mexico, meantime, managed their first shot on target near the hour-mark and failed to get into the match in an attacking sense until later in the second half. Midfielder Héctor Herrera headed home a consultation prize in the 90th minute and, while things looked nervy for Canada in injury time, they managed to hold on thanks to a brilliant on-the-line save from Milan Borjan.

With the result, their final of a two-match November window, Canada moves to 16 points and a 4-4-0 record in the final round. The top three teams in the eight-team group, known as “the Oct” qualify directly for the 2022 FIFA World Cup while the fourth-place team enters an intercontinental playoff for an additional spot.

Tuesday’s result is just the fourth time Canada has beaten Mexico in 32 tries and sees Les Rouges snag four points off of Concacaf’s top-ranked side in the final round, following a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture in October.

Also Tuesday, Atiba Hutchinson became the men’s side’s all-time caps leader, upping teammate Julian De Guzman with his 90th appearance for the senior side.

Canada will return to action in January when they open a three-match international window away to Honduras on January 27. They’re also slated to host the United States and visit El Salvador as well.
